How Long Does Formula Last?
Prepared formula lasts up to 2 hours at room temperature, up to 24 hours in the fridge, and only 1 hour once your baby starts drinking from the bottle. That is the simple formula storage rule parents search for in a hundred different ways: how long formula can sit out, how long mixed formula lasts in the fridge, and how long a bottle is good after feeding begins.
Formula storage time limits
| Situation | Time limit | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Freshly prepared formula at room temperature, not yet fed | 2 hours | Use or discard |
| Prepared formula refrigerated right away, not yet fed | 24 hours | Discard |
| Formula bottle once baby starts drinking | 1 hour | Discard leftovers, do not refrigerate |
| Formula warmed from the fridge, not yet fed | Still within the original 2-hour room-temp window | Use promptly; do not rewarm repeatedly |
| Opened ready-to-feed or liquid concentrate container, refrigerated | Follow the label; many list up to 48 hours | Discard after label limit |
| Opened powder container, dry and sealed | Usually 1 month; check the label | Discard remaining powder |
The short answer by search question
- How long can formula sit out? Up to 2 hours if baby has not started drinking.
- How long does formula last in the fridge? Up to 24 hours for formula mixed from powder and refrigerated right away.
- How long is formula good after mixing? 2 hours at room temperature, or 24 hours in the fridge if chilled right away.
- How long is formula good once warmed? Warming does not restart the clock; use it within the same 2-hour room-temperature window.
- How long is a formula bottle good after baby drinks? 1 hour from the start of feeding.
Why the 1-hour rule is the strict one
The 24-hour fridge window only applies to a bottle your baby has not touched. The moment your baby's lips meet the nipple, saliva enters the milk and bacteria begin to multiply, so a bottle in progress is good for just 1 hour at room temperature.
Once that hour passes, pour out the leftover and do not put it back in the fridge to save for later. Refrigeration slows bacteria but does not undo what has already started growing, so a partly-finished bottle cannot be rescued for the next feed.
Warming a bottle safely
Formula does not need to be warmed, but if your baby prefers it warm, do it gently.
- Stand the bottle in a bowl or pot of warm (not boiling) water, or hold it under warm running tap water for a few minutes
- Never microwave formula: it heats unevenly and creates hot spots that can scald your baby's mouth even when the bottle feels cool
- Swirl, do not shake hard, then test a few drops on the inside of your wrist; it should feel lukewarm, never hot
- Use a warmed bottle right away and do not warm it more than once
- Do not leave a bottle warming in hot water for longer than about 10-15 minutes
Quick habits that prevent waste and worry
- Make smaller bottles than you think you need; you can always prepare more if your baby is still hungry
- Store unopened fridge bottles toward the back, where the temperature is most stable, not in the door
- Label fridge bottles with the time you prepared them so the 24-hour clock is easy to track
- Keep an opened powder container in a cool, dry place with the lid tight, and use it within 1 month, never store powder in the fridge
Throw the bottle out if
- It has sat at room temperature for more than 2 hours, even if your baby never drank from it
- Your baby started drinking it more than 1 hour ago
- It was left in a warm car, by a sunny window, or anywhere warm, regardless of the time
- It smells sour or off, or looks curdled or separated in a way that does not swirl back together
- You are unsure how long it has been out: when in doubt, throw it out

Related questions
- How long can formula sit out at room temperature?
- Prepared infant formula can sit out at room temperature for up to 2 hours if your baby has not started drinking from the bottle. If feeding has started, use it within 1 hour from the first sip and discard the rest.
- How long does formula last in the fridge?
- Formula mixed from powder can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours if it was refrigerated right away and your baby has not drunk from that bottle. Keep it cold and discard it after 24 hours.
- How long is formula good after mixing?
- After mixing, prepared formula is good for up to 2 hours at room temperature or up to 24 hours in the fridge if refrigerated right away. Once baby starts drinking, the bottle is good for 1 hour.
- How long is formula good after warming?
- Warming does not reset the storage clock. A warmed bottle should be used within the same 2-hour room-temperature window, or within 1 hour once baby starts drinking. Do not microwave or repeatedly rewarm formula.
- Why does formula only last one hour after baby drinks?
- After baby drinks from the bottle, saliva can introduce bacteria into the formula. That is why leftover formula from a started bottle should be discarded after 1 hour instead of saved for later.
